Tsurikawa (つり革) are commonplace in Japan, found hanging inside train carriages for passengers to steady themselves with whilst the train is moving. In the early days of Japanese public transport, the handles were made of leather, hence the name 'Tsurikawa' - which literally translates as 'hang' (tsuri 吊) and 'leather' (kawa 革). Leather isn't particularly durable nor suitable for commercial applications, therefore in the 1950's Toyozaburou Mikami developed the polyvinyl strap which swiftly became the standard across all public trains.

Tsurikawa come in a vast array of shapes and sizes, however it is the classic round handle that has best stood the test of time and is the common most shape found on trains in Japan, the ergonomics allow for comfortable holding whilst allowing commuters to slip their wrist inside to loosely steady themselves.

So why are they so deeply rooted with the JDM car scene?

Back in the day, Bōsōzoku gangsters would steal these grab handles and hang them off the rear bumpers of heavily modified cars, often dragging them across the ground until they disintegrated. This was of course illegal and flaunting one in public was a subtle way of giving the middle finger to society, a show of rebellion and disrespect to authority.

Nowadays, car enthusiasts all over the world are still flaunting them as an expression of freedom and to uphold this Japanese tradition, albeit obtaining the Tsurikawa in a more lawful manner!

HISTORY

Tsurikawa (つり革) are commonplace in Japan, found hanging inside train carriages for passengers to steady themselves with whilst the train is moving. Uphold this Japanese tradition with our premium JDM Tsurikawa drift charm handles.

The toy-like Tsurikawa we’d seen elsewhere just didn’t cut it. We therefore spent the best part of a year trying to source a genuine supplier of the notorious subway handles found in Japan. And we succeeded. Although this brand new Tsurikawa hasn’t been used on any public transport carriages in Japan, it was born from the same place. Built to withstand daily commercial use (think Kevlar nylon reinforced strap, stainless-steel hardware, BS6853 fire safety approval for use on trains and a high tenacity ABS ring capable of withstanding over 250kg of tension).

Overkill? Probably. The best quality premium branded Tsurikawa in the world? Definitely.

installation

You will need to unscrew the stainless steel hex bolts to install, this can be done with a standard Allen/hex key tool. This hardwearing Tsurikawa is suitable to use as a functional safety handle or hang from the rear of a car whilst driving, however please keep in mind the laws of physics - in rare instances they can still break if they take a bad hit.
